Queerkind Neo Pronoun Collection:
Neopronouns are pronouns that are often used by people who identify as nonbinary. Pronouns reflect a personal identity so the number and types of pronouns a person may use is limitless.
The history of "Thon" as a pronoun dates back to the 19th century as one of the earliest attempts to introduce a gender-neutral singular pronoun in English.
Origin: The word "thon" is a contraction of "that one." It was coined by Charles Crozat Converse, an American composer and attorney, in 1858. Converse aimed to address the lack of a singular gender-neutral pronoun in English, which often led to awkwardness or ambiguity in written and spoken language.
Usage: "Thon" was intended to be used in place of "he" or "she" when the gender of the person being referred to was unknown or irrelevant. For example, sentences like "Each person must bring thon book" were suggested to avoid the use of gender-specific pronouns.
Adoption: The pronoun "thon" was actually included in dictionaries such as Webster's International Dictionary in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite being recognized in some formal linguistic contexts, "thon" never gained widespread use and eventually faded from common language.
Revival: While "thon" did not become a permanent part of English, it laid the groundwork for future conversations about gender-neutral pronouns, including the contemporary adoption of "they/them" as singular pronouns and the creation of other neo-pronouns like "xe/xem/xyr."
"Thons": As with other pronouns, "thon" had a possessive form, "thons," which functioned similarly to "his" or "hers."
Though "thon" is mostly a historical footnote today, it represents an early acknowledgment of the need for inclusive language that goes beyond the binary male-female distinction.
